I am thrilled to introduce you to Doree Martin! She is the brains and beauty behind Top Notch Mom, a blog dedicated to simple and easy recipes, DIY projects, food & product reviews, photography, and motherhood.
What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about my family (my husband and my son Matthew), my friends, and my blog Top Notch Mom. Since becoming a Mom my goal has been to spend less time in the kitchen and more time with my family and friends, while still cooking delicious meals. I love to cook and to create quick and easy recipes that can be made in 30 minutes or less. I also love to share anything I create with my friends (and the TNM community) so that they can benefit as well.
Have you always been into cooking, or was there a moment of discovery for you?
That moment of discovery was moving two hours away from my family and getting married. My husband is a really good cook, but I couldn’t expect him to work long days and then come home and cook dinner for us. I watched my mom make simple dinners my whole life and she always had the table set and food ready for when my dad came home from work. I would just pull up simple recipes I found online and practice. I wasn’t perfect and I’m still not perfect, but my husband always tells me that if it doesn’t come out delicious, we’ll order pizza. That takes the pressure off, and we haven’t ordered any pizza yet! ;-)
Why did you start a blog?
When I was pregnant with Matthew I found myself up crazy hours of the night and that lead me to spending a lot of time on the Internet. I found and followed a few moms that were pregnant at the same time I was. I loved reading and relating to what they were saying. Matthew was a little over one month old when I started Top Notch Mom. I don’t know what I was thinking at the time of it; I was a new mom and about to go back to school to be a Dental Assistant, and I wanted to share my experiences with everyone (outside of social media, that is). All in all I put no pressure on the blog and wrote and posted recipes when I could. After I finished school I was fortunate enough to become a stay at home mom, which gave me more time to dedicate to TNM. Over the last two years my blog has grown so much! I spend a lot of late nights and naptimes on it. The hard work has paid off though because I have more followers then I ever imagined, and I get to connect with them every day when I share my quick and easy recipes and my experiences as a mom.
What is the hardest part about juggling parenting and your blog?
The hardest part is finding a balance. As a full time mom and full time blogger, it’s kind of like living a double life. I don’t like to work during the daytime so I put a lot off until the nighttime when the rest of my family has gone to bed. My beauty sleep suffers the most from my blogging and mommy-ing.
What is your favorite part about motherhood?
My favorite part about motherhood is waking up to “Hi Mommy” every morning and getting to spend my days with Matthew teaching him new things and taking him on adventures. Spending quality time with each other is what matters most to me.
What have you learned about yourself since becoming a mother?
Since becoming a mother I’ve learned how strong of a woman I am. I’ve learned that I can’t worry about what other people think of me. I’ve also learned not to compare myself to anyone else. I try to live my life for my family and be happy!
