Some times, things were meant to be.
At first glance, everything was going wrong for this portrait session in Harford County’s iconic sunflower field. The family was caught in traffic making a long drive even worse. The kids were tired of being in the car, and the littlest fell asleep. (We all know how rough it can be waking up from an unexpected car nap!)
The skies were gathering clouds as I was communicating with Mom- don’t stress- I’m here- you get here when you get here. The humidity was oppressive. It was going from dark to darker when the sky suddenly burst open into fierce rainfall. I worried for this Mom, who committed so much to make the drive up to the sunflower fields from southern Maryland. Were we going to have to cancel when she was only 15 minutes away?
I refreshed the radar over and over again. We had a chance. There’s always a chance.
After about 10 minutes of torrential downpour- when all the tourists and flower visitors had finished running to their cars and driving off; when I was alone in the parking lot staring at my phone- the rain abruptly stopped. The clouds parted. The sun was shining. I stepped out of my car to find the humidity was gone. It was absolutely delightful outside! We had the entire field to ourselves for our portrait session.
Mom wasn’t late. She had arrived exactly when she was supposed to. All of the things thrown at us- they all seemed like obstacles. Problems getting in the way of our goal. But it turns out they were part of the journey and got us exactly what we needed- a beautiful portrait session in a peaceful and quiet field. A stunning sunset. No bugs or humidity to be found. Just beauty.
