Today I'm looking back to the crisp days of Fall with this beautiful, giggly family of five. We met at a park in Bel Air, MD in beautiful Harford County. This is one of the families I was blessed to work with during the Fall Family event- a short-and-sweet photo event designed to give my existing clients that nice "smile at the camera" family portrait for their Christmas card. The kids were phenomenal- big sister was nurturing and kind to her younger siblings, coaxing out smiles during uncooperative moments, knowing just the right … [Read more...]
family time in silhouette
Today I'm looking back to the summer with a family silhouette session at my favorite little sunset spot in Forest Hill in Harford County, MD. This is one of my favorite family poses in silhouette. You can really see the size of everyone- it's a great one to revisit to see how the kids grow- but it's a pose that keeps active toddlers engaged and happy. A toddler has no interest in standing still for a photo, so why make them? For this particular family portrait session, we got the typical poses- the family together, the kids together, … [Read more...]
cozy fall portraits
I love this family. We met at a park in Bel Air, MD to get some family portraits for their Christmas card last November. They look so effortlessly put together. They look like they rock that perfect Instagram life, but for real. But you know what? No one has that perfect Instagram life, and this family rocks their authenticity. It makes me love them even more. Those smiles? Mom is behind the camera, talking about poop. That's my kind of parenting, right there. Her kids have that perfect balance of good behavior with a sprinkling … [Read more...]
the joy and simplicity of childhood
With the closing of my family portrait businesses, I've found the biggest thing I hem and haw over is silhouette portraits. Maybe I should still do a few- they are so much fun. Or maybe instead I will offer a class to teach you an easy way to do your own. I can teach it virtually, or it can be an in-person workshop for locals. What would you prefer? Please let me know! In the meantime, here is a silhouette session from this past summer. We had the most perfect sunset colors, and the most perfect kiddos running and playing in the … [Read more...]
Magical Silhouettes
Calling all witches and wizards! I am so excited to share my very favorite silhouette session from this summer. This is a Harry Potter loving family, and when Mom asked if wands would show up well enough in the photograph, I got super excited. I love Harry Potter, but I've never done HP-themed silhouettes before. They looked awesome, but I decided they needed some photoshop magic to look truly magical. A wizard's duel, right at the instant of spell release. What are they casting? I think next time I want to try photoshopping … [Read more...]
a piece of your history
Once a client books a Storytelling Signature Session with me, we sit down to start planning. There is so much more that goes into your session than simply showing up with a camera. I work to make sure these sessions are low stress, but still catching all the right moments in your family. The little stories are the most important The key part of this is working with you to come up with your photo wishlist. You are the expert to your family, and I want to learn what are the moments that you cherish, what are your kids' habits and quirks, … [Read more...]
Family photos – where do you spend your time?
Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a local family of five on some documentary-style photos of their every day life together. At first, I assumed these photos would take place in their home. That's where most families spend most of their time. But you see- these beautiful people are not like most families. Pamela recently assumed ownership of the ever-popular My Gym in Bel Air. My Gym happens to be THE place to go when you have little kids. The kids work on motor skills without ever realizing they are learning anything. … [Read more...]
dogs in silhouette?
The countdown is on for the first silhouette session of the summer and I can't wait!! So today I'm looking back to a family from last summer's sessions. Three energetic and athletic kids- all with warm and cheerful personalities, and they brought the family dog with them! Can I bring my dog? I get a lot of questions about bringing dogs to these sessions so I thought I'd take some time to address it here. Dogs on leashes are always welcome to these sessions. After all, they are a member of your family! However, we only do a few … [Read more...]
Silhouette Portraits are for Everyone!
Silhouette portraits have been opened for booking to my VIP list- but don't worry- if you aren't on the list, they will open to the general public at the end of the month if space remains. In the flurry of emails, there were two repeat questions that I thought I'd share with you here. Are silhouette sessions just for the kids? The number one question this year is about the kids. While yes, the majority of silhouettes I photograph are of the kids- it's not just for the kids. It's for the whole family! I always encourage Moms and Dads to … [Read more...]
Getting in the Photo
Every year around Mother's Day, I hold a little celebration of motherhood. Moms are the picture takers, the memory makers, the keeper of stories and the family's legacy. But if you were to go through the photographs, Moms are also often invisible. There is no proof at all that we existed. And that breaks my heart. Eventually, all that we leave behind are our stories. And it's so much easier to tell a story with a photo. It helps us to remember the details. It illustrates. It doesn't just accent the story- it helps bring the story to … [Read more...]
