"MOM!!! I need cucumbers!" my littlest hollers at me from the tub, her voice echoing down the hall. I'm in the kitchen sweeping the floor and I can barely make out what she's saying. I step to the stairs to yell back, "Why? We don't eat snacks in the tub." There is a pause. I can hear the water swishing. "It's not for a snack. I need to relax." These are the little moments I want to remember when she's grown with kids of her own. … [Read more...]
siblings
Today I'm looking back to the crisp days of Fall with this beautiful, giggly family of five. We met at a park in Bel Air, MD in beautiful Harford County. This is one of the families I was blessed to work with during the Fall Family event- a short-and-sweet photo event designed to give my existing clients that nice "smile at the camera" family portrait for their Christmas card. The kids were phenomenal- big sister was nurturing and kind to her younger siblings, coaxing out smiles during uncooperative moments, knowing just the right … [Read more...]
Family Storytelling Challenge
Do you love the idea of writing down your family’s story, creating your legacy, but you don’t know where to start? Do you love watching everyone else’s 365 photos but you have no idea what you’d even photograph? Are you run down with the mundane parts of life, wondering where the magic of childhood is? Our day to day lives can feel so… boring. Wake up, get the kids ready, check off the to-do lists, cook meals, bathtime, bedtime, repeat. Repeat. Repeat. We focus on those big events as milestones in our years. Christmas. Birthdays. … [Read more...]
creative parenting solutions
Today's daily moment is brought to you by frustration, kids that would rather play than listen, and creativity. The scene: Sunday afternoon. We've had a lazy morning with tablet time on the couch under all the blankets. But now it's time to go. No one is putting on their shoes. No one wants to move. My husband hates to be late and he's tired of yelling. He grabbed one of the kids' tablets and started playing a game. He made sure the volume was up for maximum sound effects. Of course, being screen-addicted little people, their ears … [Read more...]
family time in silhouette
Today I'm looking back to the summer with a family silhouette session at my favorite little sunset spot in Forest Hill in Harford County, MD. This is one of my favorite family poses in silhouette. You can really see the size of everyone- it's a great one to revisit to see how the kids grow- but it's a pose that keeps active toddlers engaged and happy. A toddler has no interest in standing still for a photo, so why make them? For this particular family portrait session, we got the typical poses- the family together, the kids together, … [Read more...]
Let’s take back authenticity
The #momreality movement turns 6 this month! I know I've been remiss in posting the monthly #momreality roundups, to share how refreshing and real these moments of authentic motherhood on Instagram can be. I went back through the archives and saw I posted these celebratory roundup posts only 3 times last year and none in the last 10 months. So I sat down last night to find 3 posts to feature. I scrolled. And scrolled. 20 minutes later, I gave up, feeling unsettled. is authenticity just a buzzword now? Searching all the … [Read more...]
hold on to the details
As you practice finding your family stories around you, it's easy to focus on the big ones. The big lessons learned, the firsts and the lasts. Sometimes, however, the most important stories are none of those things. Yes, it's easier to share a story where I had a sudden realization of something about my kids, or something about myself. But when I scroll back through these photographs, when I re-read my words, I always find I'm most drawn to the simple scenes. The "how life really was" moments. It's all the little details that I've … [Read more...]
cozy fall portraits
I love this family. We met at a park in Bel Air, MD to get some family portraits for their Christmas card last November. They look so effortlessly put together. They look like they rock that perfect Instagram life, but for real. But you know what? No one has that perfect Instagram life, and this family rocks their authenticity. It makes me love them even more. Those smiles? Mom is behind the camera, talking about poop. That's my kind of parenting, right there. Her kids have that perfect balance of good behavior with a sprinkling … [Read more...]
taking up space
I've noticed a consistent discomfort in my yoga practice. Before class, I'm neurotically assessing my mat. Is it too close to anyone? Am I taking up too much space, where two people could fit? I'm always looking for the perfect balance of not encroaching someone's personal space bubble and not taking up too much valuable floor space for myself. During practice, I struggle to quiet my mind. Am I invading someone's space by reaching my arms out as instructed? I'm constantly checking on my limbs to make sure they don't invade anyone's … [Read more...]
everyday
I present to you: a typical December school morning. To avoid the frantic rush of "Where are my shoes? Where is my coat?" I make them out on coat/shoes/backpack a good 10 minutes before we need to leave (because on any given morning we will use that entire 10 minutes finding these things)- and if they are quick enough, they can play the rest of the time. My coat is slung over the chair from the 6:20 bus stop run with my oldest (she doesn't like walking down in the dark and asks me to drive her each morning). School papers and mail are all over … [Read more...]
