With the closing of my family portrait businesses, I've found the biggest thing I hem and haw over is silhouette portraits. Maybe I should still do a few- they are so much fun. Or maybe instead I will offer a class to teach you an easy way to do your own. I can teach it virtually, or it can be an in-person workshop for locals. What would you prefer? Please let me know! In the meantime, here is a silhouette session from this past summer. We had the most perfect sunset colors, and the most perfect kiddos running and playing in the … [Read more...]
self-care is not sloth
I've been quiet. But that's nothing new- I haven't been blogging regularly here in what- a year? But it's been a different kind of quiet. You see, all of 2019 felt like a trainwreck. Business was booming, but I was unhappy. I was having health problems. My kids were having health problems. I was borrowing time from what should have been family time to get more things done- be all the things to all the people. Except I was failing miserably at the balancing act. I wasn't writing because there wasn't time, but I was also beating … [Read more...]
Give the Gift of Scouting
The countdown to Christmas is on and the stores are packed with people trying to find the perfect gift for the loved ones in their lives. The toy aisles especially are clogged up as parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles all try to find the right gift for that special kiddo. The same with the electronics department- people staring at video games and wondering if it's a good gift. Lately, I've been embracing experience gifts. Instead of one more THING to clutter up my house, experience gifts like memberships and trips make longer lasting … [Read more...]
my favorite part of the day
While I've stopped sharing my "photo a day" project of my kids, I haven't stopped shooting it- all the images from early September onward sit unedited on my computer and I'm looking forward to catching up after the holidays. I need to tell these stories before I start to forget the details! I was scrolling through them this morning- stories of fledgeling independence, resilience, and love. Stories where I fear it's the last moments of true childhood, of growing up, and so many mundane, messy, everyday moments that I will treasure a decade … [Read more...]
Holiday Organization
This month, I asked Empowering Home Organization's Lisa Yingling to be my guest for the Small Business Spotlight. Lisa is a wonderful home organizer in Bel Air, MD. She is laid back, non-judgmental and extremely skilled with organization. I asked her to talk to us about some holiday organization tips, so check out the video below! I think my favorite tip is the one about scheduling, but remembering not to over schedule. I'm a chronic over scheduler, and it's the biggest cause of stress in my life. I'm definitely going to be putting … [Read more...]
beginner
I am a complete beginner in my mindfulness journey, and I already feel like I am learning so much about myself, about today's culture, and the way we program our brains in a manner that encourages stress. I can only speak for myself, but I don't believe my experiences are unique. I've learned I don't know how to simply BE. I've allowed my brain to get addicted to constant input- but it's not even valuable input. It's junk knowledge. I was listening to The Minimalists recently and they said "Scrolling is the new smoking." Wow- let that … [Read more...]
Magical Silhouettes
Calling all witches and wizards! I am so excited to share my very favorite silhouette session from this summer. This is a Harry Potter loving family, and when Mom asked if wands would show up well enough in the photograph, I got super excited. I love Harry Potter, but I've never done HP-themed silhouettes before. They looked awesome, but I decided they needed some photoshop magic to look truly magical. A wizard's duel, right at the instant of spell release. What are they casting? I think next time I want to try photoshopping … [Read more...]
Local Gift Guide!
We're on the countdown to Christmas and I wanted to share with you some local must-have gift ideas. If you switch even a little of your shopping from Amazon to some locally owned businesses, you can make a huge difference in the community. Manderbug Creations sells the most perfectly made, adorable hair bows for the little fashionista in your life. Ferrari Frame and Design has a shop located behind the Armory in Bel Air. Trish has some gorgeous specialty photo frames that you won't find anywhere else- perfect to gift your recent family … [Read more...]
an announcement
I've been preoccupied lately with seasons and change. Not just weather-related seasons, but the seasons of life we go through. We start with one identity, get comfortable with it, and things shift. We reassess. Perhaps redefine ourselves, and get used to the new normal. And things shift again. Nothing stays the same- but that's also what makes life beautiful and exciting and everything but boring. I took my kids to see Frozen II recently and I found the same sentiments echoed throughout the movie. Everything from Olaf waxing poetic: … [Read more...]
a piece of your history
Once a client books a Storytelling Signature Session with me, we sit down to start planning. There is so much more that goes into your session than simply showing up with a camera. I work to make sure these sessions are low stress, but still catching all the right moments in your family. The little stories are the most important The key part of this is working with you to come up with your photo wishlist. You are the expert to your family, and I want to learn what are the moments that you cherish, what are your kids' habits and quirks, … [Read more...]
